As a terminal and switching service provider for its owners, CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern, Conrail provides safe and efficient rail service for many local rail freight customers in Detroit, New Jersey, and Philadelphia. Customers located along Conrail’s lines in these shared asset areas have access to the nation’s rail network through either NS or CSX. Although Conrail no longer handles commercial matters for customers, we continue to play a critical role in serving shippers and receivers as an agent for our owners. As a local service provider, it is Conrail’s job to make sure that customers’ freight shipments are safely and efficiently moved between their rail sidings and the long-distance freight trains operated by CSX and Norfolk Southern.

CSX Transportation encompasses approximately 20,000 route miles of track in 26 states, the District of Columbia and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The CSX network serves some of the largest population centers in the nation as nearly two-thirds of Americans live within CSX’s service territory. In addition, CSX has access to over 70 ocean, river and lake port terminals along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, the Mississippi River, the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway. The company also has access to Pacific ports through alliances with western railroads. Together with its affiliate companies, CSX is one of the nation's leading transportation suppliers. The company’s rail and intermodal businesses provide rail-based transportation services including traditional rail service and the transport of intermodal containers and trailers. CSX moves a broad portfolio of products across the country in a way that minimizes the effect on the environment, takes traffic off an already congested highway system, and minimizes fuel consumption and transportation costs. With a focus on supporting railroad operations, CSX also manages a vast real estate portfolio which encompasses sales, leasing, acquisition, permitting, environmental, property management, and development activities.
